Companies Make it Difficult to Spot Fake IDs
Online companies specializing in creating fake driver’s licenses have upped the technological ante, making it difficult to spot fake identification cards.
One site advertises “high quality scannable fake IDs that replicate every security detail.” They specialize in phony driver’s licenses for any state in the U.S., Canada and Australia. The cost is $100 for one fake driver’s license.
Another company offers “high quality fake IDs” which are “state-specific” and include the holograms and/or UV ink that are often used on state driver’s licenses. The company says their “IDs are programmed to scan either by magnetic stripe or barcode or both.”
It was created by college students who tried to purchase fake identification cards to get into bars. They were cheated by a few online sites so they began making fake IDs themselves. One fake driver’s license card costs $125. They also provide fake Social Security cards for $50 each. They brag that their IDs will pass the blacklight (UV) test and feature state-specific holograms. Their E-mail and Web site are hosted offshore. “Production is done offshore as well, away from the jurisdiction of our law enforcement agencies here in the U.S.”
PennDOT recently added a new element on driver’s licenses and photo IDs which allows businesses, law enforcement and notaries to spot fake identifications. The feature is designed to suppress the color spectrum “rainbow” of normal holography. The result is a black versus white hologram at high resolution. The black and white areas reverse when the viewing angle is changed by 90 degrees. This is visible in bright, moderate and low-light environments.
Notaries must continue to be vigilant when check ing customers’ identification. If you believe the identification is suspicious, ask for a second piece of identification to see if the information, such as name and address, match.
