It became more expensive in Ohio to become a notary public as of September 20, 2019. 

The old application fee was $15. Now the cost may be as much as $150 for new commissions and $60 for renewals. In addition. Ohio notaries must undergo a Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation background check at the cost of $22. 

The Ohio Secretary of State is now responsible for all notary issues. The application fee increase is going to offset the cost the Secretary of State will incur. Those wanting to become Ohio notaries will fill out their applications on the Secretary of State's website. There is no more need to record their commissions with local court clerk offices. 

First-time Ohio notaries must take three hours of education and a notary exam. Renewing notaries will also need to take three hours of education. Renewing notaries are not required to take the notary exam.
