Ignition Interlock Shown on PA Driver's License
Current Pennsylvania law requires individuals convicted of a second or subsequent offense of driving under the influence (DUI) to have an ignition interlock device installed on all motor vehicles they own, operate or lease. The device requires the driver to provide a breath sample to start the vehicle and at periodic times during the operation of the vehicle. Act 33 of 2016, signed by Gov. Tom Wolf on May 25, will extend the requirement to first-time DUI offenders.
In addition, an individual is required to carry an ignition interlock limited license that indicates the need for an interlock device on any vehicle the individual operates. Under Act 33, the application fee for an ignition interlock limited license will be $65.
Notaries public should be familiar with the features of this driver's license which may be used for identification purposes. Ignition interlock licenses have a red banner on the left, the words "Limited License," and a red outline of Pennsylvania in the lower right corner. The type of limitation - in this case "Ignition Interlock" - is printed inside the outline.
Other features of the license, such as the duplicate photos of the bearer and holographic images, are the same as those seen on regular Pennsylvania driver's licenses.
