Notary Helps Bring Down Attorney General
The notary recorded a series of oaths, starting in January 2013, which bound the attorney general to uphold the secrecy of all state grand juries. Evidence of the oaths were entered in the notary’s register, which was kept in a locked filing cabinet in the notary’s cubicle. In November 2014, Kane testified under oath before a grand jury that she did not sign a secrecy oath for materials that were leaked to embarrass professional rivals.
When the notary learned about Kane’s grand jury testimony, she knew it wasn’t true because she had notarized the secrecy oaths. The notary then contacted the prosecutor’s office.
A search warrant resulted in the discovery of the grand jury oaths Kane and other aides signed during Kane’s tenure as state attorney general. A jury found Kane guilty of leaking secret criminal files and then lying about it in order to carry out revenge on a rival. She lost her law license and resigned from office.
The notary’s commission expired in April 2016. She did not renew.
