How to Become A Temporary Authorization Agent
Agents under contract with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) who meet certain requirements may be authorized as Temporary Authorization (TA) Agents.
Under the Apportioned Registration Program, motor carriers can operate interstate or intrastate in multiple jurisdictions with just one registration plate and one registration cab card. The cab card shows the jurisdictions where the carrier may travel. Registration fees are paid to the base jurisdiction, then apportioned (that is, a percentage of the fee is paid out) according to the mileage traveled in other jurisdictions.
A TA Agent is a private business responsible for collecting apportioned registration applications and fees and issuing Temporary Evidence of Apportioned Registration (TEAR). The TEAR shows a vehicle has been issued a 60-day Temporary Authorization permit and must be displayed inside the front windshield of the vehicle during the authorized period.
Application for authorization as a TA agent is made on Form MV-576 – Application for Authorization to Issue Apportioned Registration Credentials. The application fee is $75.
In addition to the education required by the agent service contract, each employee and owner will be required to acknowledge they have read and understand the provisions of Pennsylvania Code Title 67, Chapter 65 – Permit Agents.
