AAMVA System Helps States Limit DLs, IDs
Pennsylvania is scheduled to begin using an AAMVA information service that helps track down individuals who have drivers licenses or identificaion cards in multiple states.
Every state has a law that prohibits individuals from holding more than one driver's license or identification card. The State-to-State Verification Service makes it possible for a state to electronically check with other participating states to determine if an applicant currently holds a driver's license or identification card, including REAL ID, in another state.
The system also enables a state to send a request to another state to terminate a driver's license of identification card, based on the most recently issued credential and the individuals' preference.
The goal is to prevent individuals from getting licenses or identification cards in different states at the same time. This often occurs when a commercial driver's license holder holds a CDL in one state and a non-CDL driver's license in another state.
Eighteen states are operational or are actively working to participate in the service. Pennsylvania will begin using it on May 21, 2018.
