What To Do When You Are Resigning Your Commission

by PAN
If you are planning to resign your notary commission, there are several things you need to do, according to the notary law.

Journals

Whether you have one or many notary journals (or registers), you are required to turn them into the county recorder of deeds where your office of record is located. It is a good idea to print your name on the inside front cover of each journal.

Under the law, you only have 30 days from the date your commission expires or you resign your commission, to turn your journals into the recorder of deeds.

Notary Stamp

Do not throw your old notary stamp away. If anyone finds it, they could use it to commit fraud.

PAN recommends scraping the rubber face off of the stamp and cutting it into pieces.

Notifying the Department of State

If you no longer live or work in Pennsylvania, or you voluntarily resign your commission, you must notify the Department of State within 30 days of the effective date of your resignation.

The Department of State has a Notary Public REsignation form that can be submitted to the Department. This form may be completed and printed at:
www.dos.pa.gov/OtherServices/Notaries/NotaryServices/Pages/Update-Information-.aspx#resign.
