Vehicle Sales to Minors
The Pennsylvania Vehicle Code requires a parent or guardian's onsent for a minor individual (a peson under 18 years of age) to apply for a driver's license. However, there is nothing in the Vehicle Code which prohibits a minor from titling and registering a motor vehicle.
Because PennDOT treats a minor the same as an adult when it comes to titling and registration, a minor will not have the title work rejected solely because of his or her age. The minor must still provide the same proof of ownership, proof of identificaton and proof of financial responsibility documents as any other applicant.
Whether a vehicle dealer agrees to sell a motor vehicle to a minor is another question. Without a responsibile adult listed as the purchaser or co-purchaser, a vehicle contract with a minor may be renedered null and void. The minor can then return the vehicle and demand reimbursement.
