Pennsylvania is REAL ID Compliant

by PAN

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that the department has been notified by the federal Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that Pennsylvania is in full compliance with the REAL ID Act and regulations.

Federal REAL ID regulations require that PennDOT verify a customer’s identity, Social Security number, Pennsylvania residency, and name changes (if applicable), even if a customer already has a PA driver’s license or ID card.

PennDOT has issued more than 138,000 REAL IDs since they became available on March 1.

Customers who have been pre-verified may order their REAL ID online. Customers can visit any PennDOT Driver’s License Center, have their documents verified and imaged, and receive their REAL ID in the mail within 15 business days. Customers who visit one of 12 REAL ID Centers around the state can receive their REAL ID over-the-counter at the time of service.

There is no requirement that any resident must obtain a REAL ID and PennDOT will continue to offer standard issue driver’s licenses and photo IDs.

However, as of Oct. 1, 2020, only federally approved forms of identification will be accepted to board a commercial flight or enter a secure federal building such as a courthouse or office building. A Pennsylvania REAL ID driver’s license or ID card, a U.S. passport or passport card, or a military ID will be required on that date and beyond.

The following PennDOT Driver License Centers are able to issue REAL IDs over the counter.
